"Detsky mir" or "The world of children", is the name of the largest and best-known toy store in Russia with more than 700 stores spread across the country. On the occasion of their continuous expansion, they have recently changed the location of their headquarters in Moscow which is now in an old factory of approximately 5,500 m2, of rationalist structure with exposed bricks and with an "L" shaped plant.
To adapt this space to their needs they resorted to the Form Bureau study who faced the challenge of getting a space that will facilitate the interaction between the numerous departments and that would allow the future expansion of the equipment.
As a starting point to design the project, the Form study was inspired by the world of childhood and play.
The world of childhood It is reflected in the particular approach of shapes, furniture and decorative elements throughout the office. This furniture does not always adapt the standard proportions, but they play with the sizes to get an altered perception of reality. A proportion that conforms to that experienced by children, for whom objects and spaces are not seen in a functional or rational way, but as playgrounds in which the imagination projects an enlarged reality.
But perhaps the most surprising is the use of the board game as an analogy to conceive the design of the office.
A board game traditionally it is formed by the rules, the board and the players or figures and this they have moved it real to the office.
The entrance or reception hall marks the starting point of the game. It contains the indications that gather the general idea of the entire office in one place (only if they were the instructions). In addition to the company's recognizable symbols such as the colors of its logo, the shop windows and the toys of the stores become functional objects that greet the visitor.
Then you enter in the player zone or open plan work area, where navigation signs become a pattern on the ground used to direct the circulation. Work tables (players) occupy the space along the windows, while the darker central spaces are used for circulation and closed installations. These core volumes were considered as markers or game figures, which function as focal points within the interior interior meeting rooms, staff premises and storage areas.
The board materializes in a lighting system that extends throughout the floor and ceiling. The colors are used as codes and for each of the four departments that are assigned a Detsky mir logo color: red, yellow, blue or green.
The same idea of board games moves to meeting room designs. The most popular games like backgammon or pinball are the patterns that define and name each meeting room. The custom designed lounge seats play with the idea of candy or candy and large soft toys.
An innovative and original design that allows employees, sorry - players -, not to forget at any time the end users or customers, this, children and their particular universe.
