This is the request of our reader Alexandra from Mexico:
"Good morning, I loved your ideas to make a sofa, and I am already in search of materials! I only have one doubt: how can I make those great cushions that you put in your photographs? Once I tried to make them myself and I stayed amorphous, without volume and ugly ... Any good tip? "
As Alejandra comments, in a previous post we gave clues to build a sofa. Our proposals included large cushions that covered the structures and served as seats. Attending to this demand we will try to give some keys to get some seats firm at the same time comfortable.
They can be done in two ways, obtaining two different types of seats: pad, flat and uniform in appearance or big cushions, bulky and fluffy.
To make the pad an iron is needed foam Cut to size according to our needs. They can be ordered in mattress stores. This material is found in different densities, it is convenient to ask for advice in this regard in the store, where they should have samples available. For this job we will need an iron that is not very soft since otherwise we would have the feeling of sitting on the floor.
Once we have our piece you have to make it a sheath. We will choose a fabric taking care that it is easy to wash, because being removable we can wash it regularly.
To elaborate the sheath We will cut several pieces using the drawing as an example. The closure piece consists of two pieces of fabric C, joined by a zipper. Once attached to the contour piece B, you just have to sew it to the pieces TO, right against right, leaving the zipper open to be able to turn around the case without problems.
The giant cushions they must be filled with something more consistent than a simple wadding. If we look inside a cushion of our sofas, we will see that these usually carry a piece of foam attached to a stuffing bag to give it more consistency.
Following this example we will perform two sacks of return of the same measure. We will fill them with the chosen content: wadding, foam rubber flakes or feathers. We will place between them a foam rubber sheet about twelve centimeters thick and a smaller surface than the bags. Once placed as if they were a sandwich, we will join them with solid stitches, resulting in a single bag with a foam rubber body inside.
We will make as many fillings as we need cushions and there will be nothing left but to make some beautiful covers and enjoy our sofa.
